Theme Day: BIG

The Hancock Tower rises above Copley Square. Designed in 1976 by renowned architect I.M. Pei. This elegant structure rises 60 stories above Boston & is the tallest building in New England. The windows reflect the light & mirror the surrounding buildings, therefore, this monumental structure blends into the cityscape quite comfortably. The tower has 10,000 windows which in the earlier years had a tendency to pop out due to the pressures of wind & heat. I remember even in the early 1980's the surrounding streets were closed to traffic due to the possibility of falling panes of glass! However, this problem was finally corrected by the installation of 10,000 sensors, one per window. Each sensor monitors the vibrations of the pane of glass as an early warning signal that the glass may be popping out of the casing.
